GameUp Africa Turns 5: Building Africa’s Next Generation of Game Developers

GameUp Africa 5th Anniversary

When we launched GameUp Africa in 2021, we had one bold goal: unlock Africa’s creative potential and equip aspiring game developers with the skills, mentorship, and opportunities to compete on the global stage.

Five years later, we’ve done more than just train talent—we’ve built a continent-wide movement.

A Pan-African Pipeline for Game Dev Talent

Powered by Maliyo Games, GameUp Africa is our flagship talent development initiative for early-stage creators who want to break into the gaming industry. In a world where the global games market is expected to reach $174 billion by 2026, we believe African voices must be part of that future.

Since its inception, GameUp Africa has:

  • Trained 1,500+ developers from across 20+ African countries
  • Introduced learners to Unity, C#, game art, and audio design
  • Built a diverse alumni network that includes studio professionals, indie founders, and freelance talent
  • Expanded from a boot camp into a year-round platform with game jams, meetups, and the Elite Programme

What began as a remote training program is now a fully-fledged ecosystem shaping the next generation of creators on the continent.

Learn by Doing. Grow with the Community.

Every GameUp Africa cohort embarks on a 12-week remote learning journey that blends self-paced modules, project-based learning, and global mentorship.

Whether you’re a budding programmer, digital artist, or aspiring audio designer, we offer three tailored tracks to help you level up:

  • Programming: Build games from the ground up using C# and Unity
  • Art: Learn the principles of 2D/3D game design, animation, and environment creation
  • Audio: Discover how music, SFX, and voice elevate player immersion

From day one, you’ll join a pan-African community of game developers who grow together — collaborating on projects, competing in challenges, and gaining real-world exposure to the fast-evolving world of game development.

From Learners to Leaders

Our alumni are making waves in the industry. GameUp Africa grads have:

  • Landed roles at local and international game studios
  • Launched their own game projects and start-ups
  • Joined Maliyo’s own creative and development teams
  • Participated in global events like the Global Game Jam, Africacomicade, Africa Games Week and Playtopia.

And with each new cohort, we see the future of African game development getting brighter.

🎯 Why Now?

Mobile gaming is booming, especially in Africa. Smartphone access is rising. Monetization models are evolving. And global studios are turning their eyes toward emerging markets.

If you’re passionate about games and ready to invest in your craft, now is the time.
