2D/3D Artist

Position Summary:

Maliyo Games is seeking a skilled, highly motivated, passionate artist interested in making high quality mobile games that are both fun to play and push the limits of the platform in a challenging and rewarding environment.  This position works directly with the development team, to create, design, and produce high quality 3D assets for environments, characters and props for Mobile Game experiences and to be utilized for marketing purposes.

Our goal is to embed Africa’s vibrant culture into video games through storylines, character development, immersive environments, captivating sounds and strong visuals.

Essential Functions:

  • Work across all aspects of a game’s visual design, UI, art, animation, and more to create visually stimulating content that will enhance game playability and showcase original experiences to a wide player audience
  • Collaborate effectively with a team of artists and programmers to offer creative solutions to both art and game design challenges
  • Produce concept sketches and quick edits to communicate artistic concepts with the team
  • Create high-quality 3D and 2D assets to meet fast-paced deadlines
  • Organize and implement assets in the game engine while understanding technical constraints and possibilities
  • Create environments and hard surface assets for use in high-quality games
  • Work with the production team, other artists, and engineering to ensure consistency between vision and implementation of assets in the game engine
  • Ensure all aspects of art production are completed in a timely manner and to a high standard
  • Understand and follow direction provided by the art lead
  • Work within the production schedule, manage files and meet deadlines
  • Research and analyze the market for the concept, art, and game feelings
  • Implement new technologies to create stunning game art
  • Contribute to all aspects of game development including Game Design, Logic, Feelings, Graphics and UI


  • Bachelor’s degree in Animation, Graphic Arts, or related field required, a preference for education with a video Game emphasis or related discipline or 4 years of experience and relevant software development certifications
  • Experience in visual arts especially in 3D game art and creating high-quality and game-resolution assets
  • Strong knowledge of 3D editing tools, 3ds Max, Maya, Blender, ZBrush, etc., to be able to deliver high quality assets
  • Advanced understanding of texture painting, material setup, low and high-poly modeling, UV painting, and topology
  • Strong skills in conception, production, and integration, with a clear understanding of optimizing and implementing art assets for mobile games
  • Experience in an art role for mobile platforms (iOS and Android), Unity knowledge, and user interface design a plus
  • Understanding of animation principles and foundations, efficient UV layout for low poly objects, of the lighting tools, of anatomy for realistic humanoid characters and creatures, and creating outdoor environments for 3D games
  • A critical and artistic eye, knowledge of form, line, and lighting
  • Ability to work in multiple varied art styles and adapt styles for the target audience
  • Technical understanding of the game development process
  • Experience in Unity is a plus
  • Good sense of gameplay experience and
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, organization and time management skills
  • Personal commitment to improving your own knowledge and skills with a proactive and enthusiastic approach to work
  • Work requires continued attention to detail in establishing priorities and meeting deadlines
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously while adhering to deadlines and within a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated flexibility and the ability to work with cross-functional teams in-person and remotely
  • Online art portfolio required; this can be work-related or personal projects
