At Maliyo Games, we believe in nurturing young African talent by introducing them to the exciting world of game development. Our Junior Internship Programme, now in its second edition, was created to inspire and equip pre-teens and early teens (10 – 14 years old) with the creative, collaborative, and technical skills needed to design their own games and to see the world of digital creativity as one they can boldly enter.
This year’s internship built upon the momentum of our 2024 programme and delivered another powerful learning experience.
Programme Overview
The 2025 Maliyo Games Junior Internship was a two-week immersive programme tailored for children aged 10–14, hosted at the Maliyo studio in Lagos, Nigeria. It introduced participants to the fundamentals of game development through hands-on activities, team projects, and creative challenges.
What the Experience Involved
Over two weeks, the interns went on a journey through the world of game development.
They explored how games work. They learned how to come up with ideas, work in teams, and pitch their concepts. Every day included hands-on sessions, group discussions, and creative challenges.
Interns played and analysed games. They redesigned gameplay elements, added their own twists, and learned how to present their thoughts clearly.

In the second week, they focused on building their own game prototypes. They shared progress with the team, improved their presentation skills, and prepared for the final showcase.
The programme ended with an exhibition for parents and guests. Interns presented their work, answered questions, and proudly received their certificates.
“We were blown away by how confidently these young creators pitched their ideas and explained their game designs. Their energy and ideas give us hope for the future of African game development.” — Amanda Modebelu, Maliyo Games

Game Projects
Working in pairs, the interns created two unique game ideas:
🌀 A Gymnastics Game
This game lets players train, customise avatars, and compete in gymnastics tournaments. It features both single-player and multiplayer modes, where players can perform or serve as judges.
🌴 A Learning Adventure Game
A playful learning adventure that combines mini-games with educational content. Players explore a colourful island and complete challenges in math and English. It’s designed to make learning fun for young children.
Though early-stage, both games showed creativity, and a clear understanding of the design fundmentals.

Final Showcase Day
On the final day, interns set up an exhibition booth, pitched their projects, and shared their work with the Maliyo team and their proud parents. Snacks, applause, and photo moments rounded out the programme with warmth and celebration. Every intern received a certificate of completion, and a personalised note of encouragement.
“It’s amazing what these kids built in two weeks. Their creativity and drive were truly inspiring,” said Hugo Obi, Maliyo Games CEO.

Looking Ahead
We are proud to have hosted yet another successful Junior Internship programme and are excited to see what these bright minds will create in the future. Maliyo Games remains committed to empowering African youth through accessible game education, mentorship, and opportunities to thrive in the digital economy.
We look forward to welcoming new interns in the next edition!
